day 29 ~ the tree's knees

One of my favorite trees resides pond side at Woodland Mound Park. I'm not sure exactly what it is (a type of cypress maybe?) but I sure do treasure it in all its peculiar ways.

The love affair began in 2008 when I first discovered that I could easily fit hidden beneath its boughs ~ such a wonderfilled vantage point, especially for a tree lovin', camera totin' child at heart like myself!

This past autumn I discovered that this tree's fruit is even stranger than its knees. It begins on the branch and grows around the surrounding needles, growing into a very bizarre (rather alien looking) orb which then drops to the ground and cracks open.

Today is a very busy day and since I don't have time to add music to this post, I thought you might join me in singing Louis Armstrong's, "Wonderful World"?

Come on. I can't hear you.

  1. A lovely post (you're on a roll with this project) and quite a remarkable tree... I love how the closer we look, the more complex and yet simplified everything becomes. There is some form of unspeakable certainty in the grand design of all these myriad amazing lifeforms, that comforts my human disquiet when I most need to be comforted. A part of our obligation to the precious gift of our lives is to seek, see, and savor. You do it very well, dear friend. *sound of applauding with a couple of "yeah" zings*

  3. What a beautiful tree. I wish I knew what it was. I'll be on the lookout for you, and checking back to see if you discover the species. There is something sort of cypressy about it.

  4. I want to be there! Yes, I'm singing with you while we chill under the tree. These pictures make me really grateful for life, roots, fruits, friends, and taking a moment to count our blessings in beauty that surrounds us if we stop long enough to notice.

  5. I was going to reply to all of your amazing comments but with all the singing and the "yeah" zings, all my words have flown out the window.

"I see leaves of green, red roses too, I see them bloom above me and you and I think to myself, what a wonderful world..."

*crosses fingers that she's remembered the lyrics properly*
